Limit sales to areas where utilities can be procured and systems can be supported.

Biomass energy, chemical recycling, and other new technologies are being researched and developed around the world in an effort to achieve a carbon-neutral society. However, there is concern that, unlike conventional fossil fuels, new raw materials generated from such R&D efforts may contain hydrocarbon mixtures that could have a detrimental effect on product quality or production processes. Of the hydrocarbons involved, it can be particularly difficult to detect heterocyclic compounds selectively with high sensitivity. Shimadzu’s unique ELEM-SPOT system is the world’s first Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) with an element-selective combustion unit (EL-30) included for selectively analyzing nitrogen-containing compounds or oxygenated compounds in complex hydrocarbon compounds with high sensitivity.

Principle of Detecting Oxygenated Compounds

If now-common CxHyNzOw hydrocarbons are directly detected by FID or GC-MS after column separation, then they are detected based on a single peak. If that peak is detected by GC-MS after column separation and oxidative dissociation, and further analyzed by m/z, then MS chromatograms are obtained for each product of oxidative dissociation. Since the dissociation products are unique for each element contained in the compound, a unique chromatogram is obtained for each specific hetero-element contained in the compound.

In the analysis of oxygenated compounds, oxidative decomposition is performed using isotopic oxygen (18O2) in the carrier gas, and screening is conducted to separate oxygen-containing compounds from other components.
Dedicated data analysis tools are employed to accurately identify oxygen-containing compounds.

18O2 (Isotopic) Oxidation Gas

16O2 Oxidation Gas

ELEM-SPOT, UFMS, LabSolutions and ClickTek are trademarks of Shimadzu Corporation or its affliated companies in Japan and/or other countries.

Spotting Targets Selectively

Hydrocarbon compounds are first separated by GC and then oxidatively dissociated in the element-selective combustion unit. Then the separated compounds are detected by MS using the selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. As a result, the difficult analysis of trace quantities of an oxygenated compound was enabled by using isotopic oxygen (18O2) as the oxidation gas (Pat. No. WO 2017/114654). Furthermore, nitrogen-containing compounds can be detected selectively by using regular oxygen (16O2) as the oxidation gas.

GC-Comb-MS ModeThe GC-Comb-MS mode is a configuration where an element-selective combustion unit is connected after the GC and before the MS. In this mode, oxygen/nitrogen-containing compounds can be selectively detected. After separating hydrocarbon compounds with GC, the compounds are oxidatively decomposed in the combustion catalytic reactor and detected using the SIM mode.

MS Chromatogram from GC-Comb-MS (Oxygen Content Analysis)

(1) Cyclohexanone(8) Hexylbutyrate(2) 2-ethoxyethylacetate(9) Dodecane(3) Benzaldehyde(10) Phenethyl acetate(4) Dimethyl malonate(11) Dimethyl phthalate(5) 2-pentyl butyrate(12) Acephatene(6) Acetaldehyde(13) Dibenzofurane(7) 1-octanol(14) EicosaneNote: This provides a unique chromatogram that can be used to determine whether compounds contain oxygen.
Compounds 9, 12, and 14 do not contain oxygen.

MS Direct Mode

The MS Direct mode is a common configuration in GC-MS. The ELEM-SPOT system enables analysis in a typical GC-MS setup without passing through the element-selective combustion unit by switching the configuration flow paths.

Securing a Seamless Workflow

The GC-Comb-MS mode enables selective analysis of specific heterocyclic compounds with high sensitivity while the MS direct mode enables conventional GC/MS analysis. Each mode can be specified and controlled easily using the LabSolutions system control software, allowing both modes to be used quickly and conveniently for analysis.

Automated Switching between Oxidation GasesIn GC-Comb-MS mode, Shimadzu’s unique GC gas selector can automatically switch between oxidation gases for trace analysis of either oxygen or nitrogen.

Simplified Routine Maintenance

One-Step GC Injection Port MaintenanceSystems are equipped standard with ClickTek nuts that enable one-step maintenance of a sample injection port without using a tool to open/close the sample injection port.

Easier Reaction Tube ReplacementThe reactor is oriented horizontally to provide easier access to the reaction tube and eliminate the need for reactor disassembly for the tube replacement.

Supporting Cutting-Edge R&D

The ELEM-SPOT system can provide analysis results that are essential for researching and developing biomass, chemical recycling, and other solutions for achieving a carbon-neutral society.

Analysis of Oxygenated Compounds in Wood Bio-OilBiomass used as a raw material for bio-oils can contain large amounts of oxygenated compounds that can damage the catalysts used during oil purification. Therefore, such compounds must be identified and removed.

Changes in the Catalytic Ability of Hydrotreating Phenols Over TimeNote: As the continuous usage time of the catalyst increases, it can be seen that oxygen-containing components such as phenols are not processed.Because the ELEM-SPOT system can uniquely identify oxygenated compounds in countless matrices, it can be useful for quickly checking the effectiveness of oxygenated compound removal capacity over time.

Analysis of Nitrogen-Containing Compounds in Bio-Oils Derived from Algae

Algae, which has attracted attention as a raw material for bio-oils, contains many nitrogen compounds. However, nitrogen compounds can affect catalytic performance during hydrogenolysis, so they must be appropriately treated before bio-oil purification. Shown above is a chromatogram of bio-crude oil derived from algae and a chromatogram of specifically detected nitrogen compounds in crude oil. In addition to oxygenated compounds, the ELEM-SPOT system can specifically detect compounds that contain nitrogen atomic configurations.

The injection port can be opened or closed without tools by simply sliding the ClickTek Nut lever. Replace the insert, slide the lever, and feel the click to ensure leak-free performance.

②Fast inlet maintenance, Easy sTop

Clicking the Maint. (Maintenance) button on the GC front will start lowering the temperature of the GC inlet and oven, and stop the gas supply automatically*. After maintenance of the inlet, clicking the button again will return the instrument to standby after an automatic leak check. Routine maintenance procedures can be further simplified.

Note: Disabling the automatic gas supply shutdown to protect the MS detector is possible.

③Tool-less column installation

The ClickTek makes column attachment a one-touch operation. A noticeable clicking sensation signals a secure column connection, putting the user at ease.

Note: The ClickTek connector is optional.

Less Energy and Gas Consumption

ECO design

The Brevis GC-2050 consumes 30 % less power than conventional GCs. It also minimizes helium usage and supports operations with alternative carrier gases.

Comparison of power consumption on a GC run cycle.
*Comparisons were made under the following analytical conditions.SPL: 270℃, FID: 270℃,
Oven: 50℃ → (10℃/min）→250℃（10min Hold）→（Cooling）→50℃
*The amount of electricity consumed will vary depending on the laboratory environment.

High-performance insulating materials and a smaller oven have eliminated heat loss. As a result, the Brevis GC-2050 achieves about a 30 % reduction in power consumption during analysis compared to conventional GCs.

Safer and even faster analysis with H2 gas

High-speed analysis of impurities in benzene using hydrogen carrier gas

The Brevis GC-2050 can be equipped with a hydrogen sensor. Not only does it enable early detection of potential leaks in the oven and maintain a safe standby mode, but if a hydrogen leak occurs, it turns off the main power to prevent an accident. In addition, the GC main unit has an automatic carrier gas leak check function that supports the use of hydrogen carrier gas. Furthermore, a gas selector* can switch the carrier gas to nitrogen after an analysis has been completed to enhance safety. Hydrogen carrier gas enables fast analysis (application example above) and maximizes throughput in the laboratory.* Hydrogen sensor and gas selector are options.

Built-in Analytical Intelligence

Automatic remote operation

With Remote Display and LabSolutions Direct, GC systems can be accessed from anywhere with a smart device or a PC, dramatically improving the analysis workflow and enabling new ways of working.

Automating the Procedures of Experienced Analysts, Clean Pilot

Baselines can be unstable during GC startup. The Clean Pilot feature provides quick and efficient automatic conditioning to provide stable analytical results while reducing the burden on laboratory personnel.

Analysis Starts Immediately under the Optimal Conditions, Automatic Start and Stop Function

The Brevis GC-2050 automatically performs gas and temperature control, allowing the system to shut down and start up unattended. When not performing analysis, the system can be shut down to reduce unnecessary power and gas consumption, thereby reducing running costs.

Supply Gas Check

When connecting a main and a spare gas cylinder to the gas selector (option), the gas selector will monitor the main gas cylinder pressure and automatically switch the gas supply to the backup line when the cylinder becomes empty. This prevents problems before they occur and allows you to continue analysis with peace of mind.

Enabling Remote Control and Monitoring, LabSolutions Direct

Remote operation and monitoringLabSolutions Direct, a standard feature of LabSolutions, allows you to monitor instrument status and chromatographic signals, start and stop the instrument, and start the analysis from a web browser on a PC or smart device at a remote location.

Making Routine Analysis More Convenient

The GC-2010 Pro represents a new generation in Routine GC. Fast oven heating and cooling reduces the analysis time and allow high sample throughput. Based on high-end GC technology, it combines easy operation with efficient analysis and excellence in sensitivity and precision.

Flexible lineup for various analysis

Two analytical lines can be operated simultaneously for different applications

Achieving excellent reproducibility

High-speed analysis

Rapid oven heating / cooling

Constant linear velocity mode quickly determines separation conditions

Gas saver function reduces helium consumption

Achieving excellent reproducibility

All units including the column oven, flow controller and sample injection unit are comprehensively optimized at the design stage to achieve world-class repeatability of peak area and peak height. The large vaporization capacity ensures excellent repeatability, even when using solvents that are highly volatile upon injection, such as acetone. Long-term stability of retention time is realized by the new room compensation technology built into the advanced flow controller (AFC).

Peak area reproducibility

High-speed analysis

High-speed analysis with narrow bore capillary columns reduces analysis time and improves sample throughput. GC-2010 Pro has excellent flow and pressure control system, which can meet the requirements of rapid analysis with conventional configuration and effectively improve the analysis efficiency.

High-speed analysis of coffee flavoring

Rapid oven heating / cooling

GC-2010 Pro incorporates a double-jet cooling system, which enables the reduction of cooling time from 450℃ to 50℃ in 3.4min, realizing more efficient and rapid cooling. In addition, with the ability of rapid heating, GC-2010 Pro can significantly reduce the analysis time.

Constant linear velocity mode quickly determines separation conditions

The constant linear velocity mode related to the separation performance is recommended for the carrier gas control and can obtain the optimum separation conditions in the shortest time compared with the previous control method by setting the column inlet pressure and flow.

Gas saver function reduces helium consumption

Reducing running cost by gas saving is an important issue in GC operation. GC-2010 Pro reduces gas consumption by decreasing of split ratio after injection as well as automatic shutdown functions after finishing all analysis.

Options enhancing scalability

Shimadzu’s new-generation GC-2025 capillary gas chromatograph minimizes environmental impact by reducing power and carrier gas consumption while retaining the performance capabilities required for capillary analysis. The GC-2025 incorporates a digital flow controller that controls both the carrier and detector gases and a newly designed energy-saving column oven that features small volume and less heating loss, realizing a dramatic improvement in operation costs. The compact GC-2025 is the gas chromatograph for environmentally friendly, high value performance.

Compact, All-in-One Design

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for instruments with a smaller installation footprint to more effectively utilize laboratory space. The GC-2025 meets this requirement while incorporating all the functions required for normal capillary analysis.

Units for Normal Analysis Crowded into a Compact Space

The split/splitless injection unit (SPL), flame ionization detector (FID), and electronic flow controllers (AFC/APC) are installed as standard.

Compact Design Accepts Commercial Capillary Columns Despite the compact instrument design, the small-capacity oven accommodates the shape of commercially available capillary columns (column depth 9 cm max.).

Excellent Basic Performance

Incorporating design elements from the high-performance GC-2010 Plus capillary gas chromatograph, the GC-2025 achieves energy savings while offering the highest performance demanded for capillary analysis, delivering highly accurate analysis results and enhanced productivity.

High-Sensitivity Trace Analysis

The FID minimum detectable limit of 2 pgC/s offers high sensitivity for trace analysis.

Electronic Flow Controllers Achieve Excellent Operability and Reproducibility

The GC-2025 adopts the same well-proven electronic flow controllers (AFC/APC) for carrier gas and detector gas control that are used in the GC-2010 Plus. They offer highly accurate flow control to achieve excellent reproducibility.

Eco-Friendly

The eco-friendly GC-2025 significantly cuts electric power costs compared to previous models to reduce the burden on the environment.
Heat losses are significantly reduced through high-performance insulation and a smaller oven size to reduce the heating requirements. In addition, it incorporates an energy-saving heater to further cut power costs.
Power consumption is reduced by 30% for programmed temperature analysis in comparison to other GC models.
(The actual power consumption depends on the ambient temperature during analysis.)

This product conforms to Shimadzu’s Eco-labeled designation.
* Energy savings: 30% reduction as compared to the previous model

The Next Industry Standard

In today’s environment, results are needed regardless of whether the analyst is working in the laboratory, the office, or from home. With the flexibility to accommodate a variety of applications, the Nexis GC-2030 supports the analyst’s procedures beyond the laboratory, at virtually any location.

Designed with the Analyst in Mind

Delivers the Best Performance Regardless of Location

Laboratories today require faster and higher performance analysis. The Nexis GC-2030 features Analytical Intelligence to help achieve these goals. Clean Pilot, a system conformity test, and LabSolutions can provide an automated workflow together with remote operation and monitoring from instrument startup to analysis completion. Automated workflows incorporate the work-style habits of experienced analysts. The result is reliable data collected over extended periods and higher productivity.

Information at Your Fingertips

Analysts will benefit from the touch panel interface, which features clear graphics that display information instantly whenever needed. The user-friendly interface leaves the operator free to focus on obtaining optimal analytical results.

Main settings controllable via the touch panel on the GC unit

Analytical conditions

Self-diagnostics

Automatic carrier gas leak check

Chromatogram display

Making Routine Analysis More Convenient2D Code Navigation

Reading a 2D code shown on the touch panel directs the user to a website with instructional videos on maintenance. This feature helps improve system availability and increases efficiency.

Tool-free Column Installation

ClickTek connectors* make tool-free column installation a snap. The click sensation felt when finished attaching the column provides a more reliable connection and ensures a better seal under all operating conditions. In addition, a light has been installed inside the oven to brightly illuminate the area at hand, easing the burden on the operator when attaching columns.
* optional

One-Touch Inlet Maintenance

The injection port can be opened or closed without tools by simply sliding the ClickTek lever. Replace the insert, slide the lever and feel the click for a leak-free install every time.

Automating the Procedures of Experienced Analysts

Clean Pilot FunctionDuring typical GC startup and batch analyses, in order to dispose of impurities remaining within the column, the operator has to implement conditioning by manually raising the oven temperature. Using the Clean Pilot function, conditioning is performed automatically, leading to more stable analytical results while easing the burden of lab work.

Remote Operations and Monitoring

LabSolutions Direct Accommodates Remote WorkLabSolutions Direct is a remote access tool used to control or monitor GC systems via a simple user interface on a commercially available smartphone or tablet. Consequently, analyses can be performed while monitoring the status of instruments from locations away from the laboratory.

Directly access a GC unit in the laboratory from
a smartphone or tablet computer

Perform these main settings via a smart device• Starting and stopping the GC
• Starting and stopping analysis
• Monitoring chromatograms
• Checking instrument status
• Browsing analysis results in PDF format
• Checking the status of multiple instruments

Best-in-class* Sensitivity and Reproducibility

Achieves Exceptional Reproducibility

Nexis GC-2030 provides the best-in-class analysis accuracy. Shimadzu’s new AOC-30 auto-injector automates the analysis, reduces an operator’s workload, and enables continuous analysis with a high degree of accuracy that cannot be achieved by manual operation. In addition, an advanced flow controller (AFC) included in the CPU supports carrier gas constant linear velocity control, constant flowrate control, constant pressure control, and various other control modes and achieves exceptionally high reproducibility for ultra-high-speed and ultra-high-precision control modes.

* As of July 2021, according to a Shimadzu survey.

Simultaneously Control Up to Three Injection Units and Four Detectors

Barrier Discharge Ionization Detector (BID)

The barrier discharge ionization detector (BID-2030) is a universal detector that offers high-sensitivity analysis by using a low-frequency dielectric barrier discharge plasma for ionization. The BID generates helium (He) plasma by applying a high voltage to a quartz glass tube. The light energy from the He plasma then ionizes the target components and the ions are collected and output as peaks using a collection electrode. A wide variety of compounds other than He and neon (Ne) are detected with high sensitivity.

Barrier Discharge Ionization Detector
(BID-2030)

Exceptional Versatility and Productivity

Simultaneously Control Up to Three Injection Units and Four DetectorsThe most optimized system can be selected depending on the purpose of analysis and target components. Four detectors can be controlled simultaneously using LabSolutions.*
In addition, both capillary and packed columns can be attached, so multiple analysis methods can be run with a single GC unit, saving on laboratory space.

* The number of detectors installed depends on the type of detector.

AOC-30+HS-20 NX (Trap model) + GCMS-QP2020 NX

Switching Carrier Gases via a Gas SelectorChanging the type of carrier gas involves a great deal of work, including the replacement of the piping and gas filters. With the gas selector (optional), the carrier gas can be switched via the software, so different analyses can be performed while easily switching the carrier gas.

Switching Gas with LabSolution GC
